So first of all, this post is something you probably don’t care about.
The reason I’ve been going on so much about the new lens today is because I’m kind of bittersweet about saying goodbye to my old one.
This is hopefully the last picture taken with it (I’ve had my fair share of shipping problems when expecting camera stuff before… so maybe I will end up with this lens still on my camera by end of day tomorrow and take more pictures), and tomorrow I’ll have a lens that should replace this one, so there is no reason to keep this one around.
The reason I’m so bittersweet is because this has been my primary lens for about 4 years. When I got my first XT, this was the lens that came with it (same focal length, but it was without the IS). I used it for a long time, then finances got in the way and I had to sell it. Eventually I got another XT, had to sell that, got another XT had to sell that, got this camera, and had this same lens. (This is when I vowed to never sell my camera equipment again. I’d rather be homeless. They’re my priorities, judge all you want.) I’ve had a 50mm 1.8 as well, but this has been the lens that I’ve primarily used through the years. It has gotten me through weddings, parties, concerts, vacations, and just.. life. It has been such a big part of my photography and now I’m replacing it. I’ve taken pictures with it that people have had to really analyze to make sure that yes, I’m indeed using this 18-55 because.. let’s face it. This lens is pretty limited. It has a good range but has terrible barrel distortion, and sometimes just doesn’t do a good job of capturing what I want it to, but anyway.. the point is, I’ve gotten pretty good at taking a picture anticipating what the lens is going to do with it. And now that’s going to be gone.
As bittersweet as I am, I can’t wait to finally upgrade. My life has handed me a good deal of shit that I’ve had to deal with and because of this I’ve had to put myself second, third, fourth.. last. Always. I finally get to spoil myself, in a way that I want to. This and the flash have been bigger accomplishments that I let on. Somehow I’ve managed to land jobs that I never should’ve had because I’m very ill-equipped to be a ‘photographer’. I’ve done it with this lens.
Anyway, back to real life. Goodbye lens.
